• ** "Making the Most of Ramadan: A Guide to Spiritual Enrichment" **

To make the most of Ramadan and truly embrace its spiritual significance, consider the following practices:

    1. **Set Clear Intentions (Niyyah):** Before Ramadan begins, reflect on your goals and intentions. What do you hope to achieve spiritually, emotionally, and physically? Write them down and revisit them throughout the month.

    2. **Plan Your Day:** Structure your daily routine around your spiritual practices. Allocate specific times for prayer, Quran recitation, and reflection. Ensure you balance your daily obligations with your religious duties.

    3. **Suhoor and Iftar Preparation:** Plan nutritious and balanced meals for Suhoor and Iftar. Avoid overeating, and focus on foods that provide sustained energy and hydration.

    4. **Quran and Duas:** Dedicate time each day to reading and reflecting on the Quran. Learn new Duas (supplications) and incorporate them into your daily prayers. Aim to complete the Quran by the end of the month.

    5. **Taraweeh Prayers:** Attend Taraweeh prayers at the mosque, if possible. The communal atmosphere enhances the spiritual experience and fosters a sense of unity.

    6. **Charity and Good Deeds:** Increase your charitable activities by giving Zakat and Sadaqah. Volunteer your time and help those in need. Acts of kindness and generosity amplify the blessings of Ramadan.

    7. **Self-Reflection and Repentance:** Use the quiet moments of the day and night for self-reflection. Seek forgiveness for past mistakes, and strive to improve yourself. Ramadan is a time for spiritual renewal and personal growth.

    8. **Avoid Distractions:** Limit distractions such as excessive screen time, social media, and non-essential activities. Focus on your spiritual journey and prioritize your connection with Allah.

    9. **Family and Community:** Engage in meaningful conversations and activities with family and friends. Share knowledge, support each other, and strengthen your bonds. Participate in community events and initiatives.

    10. **Laylat al-Qadr:** Seek out and make the most of Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Engage in intense prayer, recitation, and supplication, as this night holds immense blessings.

    11. **Health and Wellness:** Take care of your physical health by staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and engaging in light exercise. A healthy body supports a healthy spirit.

    12. **Journaling:** Keep a journal to document your thoughts, reflections, and progress throughout Ramadan. This can be a valuable tool for self-awareness and future growth.

By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can maximize the spiritual benefits of Ramadan and experience a deeper connection with your faith.

May your Ramadan be filled with blessings

  • The Ottoman 16th Century Ali Macar Map (Ali Macar Reis'in Dünya Haritasฤฑ)

The Ali Macar Map is a striking example of 16th-century Ottoman cartography, created by the renowned Ottoman navigator Ali Macar Reis. This world map, dated to 1567, reflects the rich seafaring tradition of the Ottoman Empire and offers a unique perspective on global geography during the height of Ottoman naval power.

    The map illustrates:

The Mediterranean Sea, the heart of the Ottoman maritime empire.
Portions of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, showing the regions the Ottoman Empire was directly or indirectly involved with.
An artistic representation of world geography that reflects the knowledge of the time, with some areas detailed and others more speculative, reflecting global exploration.
Ali Macar Reis’ map exemplifies the Ottoman Empire’s sophisticated understanding of navigation and geography, influenced by both Islamic and European cartographic traditions.

  • Calculating the radius of the earth over a thousand years ago required a lot of imagination. It was Abu Reyhan Al-Biruni, the 10th century Islamic mathematical genius, who combined trigonometry and algebra to achieve this very numerical feat.

Biruni’s scholarly legacy has inspired scientists and mathematicians for several centuries, and his name continues to command respect even today.

Scholars like Biruni were born at a time when much of the world’s scientific and mathematical knowledge was translated into Arabic. By the time he came of age, he was also introduced to concepts developed by scholars from different civilisations and centuries. From the scientific literature of the Babylonians to those of the Romans, to ancient Indian texts on astrology, Biruni learnt from it all. Like other Muslim scholars from the Golden Age of Islam, he was also hungry for knowledge.

According to the Turkish Professor, Fuat Sezgin, intellectually sound debates occurred between the 27-year-old Biruni and 18-year-old Ibn Sina. The two great minds are known to have discussed ‘The propagation of light and its measurement’ in a great depth. Sezgin, who died in 2018, concluded that the quality of those debates is rare and probably does not exist even today.

  • FATHER OF ROBOTICS: ISMAIL AL-JAZARI (1136–1206)

Ismail Al-Jazari was a polymath: a scholar, inventor, mechanical engineer, artisan, artist, and mathematician from the Artuqid Dynasty of Jazira in Mesopotamia. ‘The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices’ is a medieval Arabic book written by Ismail al-Jazari in the 12th century. It describes over fifty mechanical devices and automata, including clocks, water-raising machines, musical automatons, and humanoid robots. Al-Jazari provides detailed instructions for constructing each device and includes anecdotes and historical references. The book had a significant influence on the development of European clockmaking and automata, offering insights into daily life and technological innovations in the Islamic world during the medieval period. It’s his book that influenced key concepts of modern-day robotics.

  • Cleopatra ascended the throne at the age of 17 and died at the age of 39. She spoke 9 languages. She knew the language of Ancient Egypt and had learned to read hieroglyphics, a unique case in her dynasty. Apart from this, she knew Greek and the languages โ€‹โ€‹of the Parthians, Hebrews, Medes, Troglodytes, Syrians, Ethiopians, and Arabs.

With this knowledge, any book in the world was open to her. In addition to languages, she studied geography, history, astronomy, international diplomacy, mathematics, alchemy, medicine, zoology, economics, and other disciplines. She tried to access all the knowledge of her time.

Cleopatra spent a lot of time in a kind of ancient laboratory. She wrote some works related to herbs and cosmetics. Unfortunately, all her books were destroyed in the fire of the great Library of Alexandria in 391 AD. C. The famous physicist Galen studied her work, and was able to transcribe some of the recipes devised by Cleopatra.

One of these remedies, which Galen also recommended to her patients, was a special cream that could help bald men regain their hair. Cleopatra's books also included beauty tips, but none of them have come down to us.

The queen of Egypt was also interested in herbal healing, and thanks to her knowledge of languages, she had access to numerous papyri that are lost today. Her influence on the sciences and medicine was well known in the early centuries of Christianity. She, without a doubt, is a unique figure in the history of humanity.

When a woman has knowledge of Deen, she can lead her children in humility.

When children have knowledge of Deen, they can lead their parents to Jannah.

May Allah SWT grant everyone the Nihmath of Deen Ameen.
