    How does the new Hummer SUV drive? Basically like a smaller Hummer truck. That's to say that the ride is supple, the cabin is hushed, but don't try and hustle it around any tight corners as handling isn't it's bag. With somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 pounds of curb weight, the Hummer SUV is lighter than the Hummer truck, mainly because the battery is smaller. Oddly there are a number of key details that GMC is keeping under wraps like: how big is the battery? How much does it weigh? Etc but there's a great deal we do know and now that the embargo has lifted we can talk about it! 0-60? 3.5 seconds verified. Why is it slower than the truck despite being lighter? That's because the loss of 4 of the 24 battery modules causes the max power output of the pack to drop from over 1,000 HP to "just" 830 HP. The 11,500 lb-ft of torque? That's just marketing insanity. The real number is somewhere between 700-800 lb-ft at the motor. The bigger number is calculated at the wheels which is insane since nobody else does that and GMC only did because they wanted the number to look crazy. Measured this way a Diesel Silverado 3500 would be 14,129. Doesn't sound so impressive now, does it? Anyway. Sadly it was super muddy and raining the day we were driving the hummer so while we were able to 0-60 the SUV, we couldn't take it off road as they were sinking into the mud pit. The SUV's shorter wheelbase and overall length vs the truck improves the offroading numbers dramatically. Approach/departure/breakover angles go from 49/38/32 to 49/49/34 and ground clearance increases a hair to 16-inches even. (Max in extract mode) There's still 32 inches of water fording capability and the turning circle drops to a sub-compact like 35.4 inches thanks to the rear wheel steering. The rear steering is impressive in parking lot maneuvers, which is handy since the Hummer is 93.7 inches wide with the mirrors. GMC had us start our day in downtown San Francisco which, let's be honest, isn't its natural habitat. It felt like driving a dump truck down a bike path. On the other hand, that's kind of the point of the Hummer. As stupid as the Hummer is, it represents part of the spectrum of electrification. Not all EVs need to be efficient grocery getters, you can have totally insane EVs too. I can't say I "want" a Hummer, but I'm glad it exists and if I were ever to buy one, it'd be the SUV.
