• At the Cingino Dam, located 7 kilometers (4 miles) southwest of Antrona Schieranco, province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in Piedmont, Italy, you will see some Alpine ibexes climbing up its wall.

The Cingino Dam is almost vertical. It is 160 feet high and these wild goats climb almost to the top. This species of goat lives in the European Alps, has split hooves with rubber-like soles. They are exceptional climbers... but watching them climb up this vertical wall is absolutely amazing! Why would they do this?

Their diet, which consists mostly of grass, gives them a huge craving for salt. Coincidentally, the wall of the Cingino Dam in Italy is built of salt-encrusted stones, with the really good, salty stone blocks near the top of the dam. So, to get to these mineral-rich salts, these goats do the seemingly impossible... they climb up a vertical wall.

  • #DidYouKnow
that historically, coffee as a hot beverage was introduced to the world by Muslim saints in the 15th-century in Yemen?

Now the whole Western world drinks coffee. It was first discovered by the 9th-century Ethiopian goat-herder Kaldi. In its earliest days, coffee helped Sūfīs from Yemen to stay up during late nights of devotion (Dhikr). Later brought to Cairo by a group of students, the coffee buzz soon caught on around the empire. By the 16th century it reached Turkey, but not until the 17th century did the beans start boiling in Europe, brought to Italy by a Venetian trader. Did you know this?

  • What is Messi wearing as he holds up the World Cup?

The #bisht or abaya is a traditional robe of honour worn to celebrate prestigious occasions and symbolises respect and royalty.

As the Emir of Qatar did for Messi, a ruler would bestow his own or a gifted bisht as a mark of special honour, or to commemorate an important event (like winning the World Cup and being the GOAT).

Robes of honour are made of luxurious fabric and embroidered in gold. The amount of gold embroidery indicated the individual’s rank – the more gold in the robe, the higher the rank of the person.

You might also recognise that graduation gowns resemble the bisht or Abaya. That is because they have Arab-Islamic roots.
When a scholar received their degree, they would often be presented with a robe of honour indicating they were now qualified to teach. Henry G. Farmer states that the tradition of the gowns can be traced to Fatimid times (909-1171):
“In the colleges in Cairo under the Fatimids, the doctors in the various faculties wore distinctive gowns (khila’), and it is said that the ordinary gown of British universities retains the original form of the Arabic khil’a” (Historical Facts for the Arabian Musical Influence, p 188).

Messi understood and revelled in the deep honour of the garment that he was presented with and wore it with pride, but it is shocking to see so many western media outlets and well-known commentators marking the moment with ignorant and outright racist headlines.

The Qatar world cup was amongst the best ever organised, and those who attended, from every corner of the globe and every background attested to it. It was such an incredible opportunity to learn about the beauty and traditions of Arab culture. Then, we’d realise that our cultures are more interlinked than we thought.

  • Football fans in Qatar’s World Cup hit back at Germany by holding up pictures of Mesut Ozil, the former Germany player of Turkish descent who had faced discrimination in 2018 while we was playing for the country’s national football team.

On November 27, a group of fans held copies of a hand-drawn sketch of Ozil, while others showed pictures of him playing with Germany during the team’s match with Spain.

The display was apparently in response to Germany’s questionable treatment of Ozil, the former player who quit the national team after becoming a target of racist abuse and a scapegoat for Germany’s early World Cup exit in 2018.

Fans also protested German players’ behaviour when they covered their mouths to protest against FIFA following the governing body’s clampdown on political symbol messages.
