On May 29, the UN reported that aid deliveries to Gaza had decreased by 67 percent since the closure of the Rafah border crossing on May 7. "Our colleagues in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) tell us that widespread Israeli bombardments continue to be reported. Ground incursions and heavy fighting are also affecting northern, central and southern Gaza," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters at a news conference. "The flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza has dropped by 67 percent since the 7th of May," Dujarric said, attributing this primarily to the closure of the Rafah border crossing. Dujarric also stated that health and service facilities are shutting down one by one, with displacement from the attacks further impacting resource distribution. The World Central Kitchen, a non-profit organisation that has been providing meals to Palestinians in besieged Gaza, is one of the organisations in Rafah, in the southernmost part of the Palestinian enclave, that has ceased operations. "In the face of Israeli operations in Rafah, countless families are being forced to flee once again. Ongoing attacks have forced us to pause work at our main kitchen in Rafah…," the charity said on social media platform X on May 28. The charity recently resumed its work in Gaza after suspending operations in April following the killing of seven of its workers in three Israeli air strikes.

Turkish homegrown fighter jet KAAN on Monday successfully conducted its second successful test flight, said the head of the nation’s Defense Industry Agency. “Our national combat aircraft, which successfully made its first flight on Feb. 21, took off from the runway at 08.46 this morning, remained in the air for 14 minutes, and reached an altitude of 10,000 feet,” Haluk Gorgun, the agency head, said on X. KAAN, the first fifth-generation fighter jet manufactured domestically, aims to replace the Turkish army's aging fleet. KAAN will be capable of air-to-air combat with next-generation weapons and precision strikes from internal weapon mounts at supersonic speed, and will provide increased combat power with AI and neural network support. The latest development makes Türkiye one of the few countries to own this technology. It is part of Türkiye’s continuing efforts to shift most of its defense vehicles, weapons, and supplies from foreign sources to domestic ones.

Ankara’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Gulnur Aybet, said that, “under Türkiye’s leadership, we added the UNGA resolution declaring crimes against holy books as violations of international law to the UNESCO decision draft.” “While stating our support for combatting all forms of hate crimes, I emphasised the alarming increase in crimes associated with hatred against Islam in recent years,” the envoy added. “I noted that UNESCO should act in line with UN resolutions in this regard. The draft resolution was accepted with the amendments we proposed. Nine countries have paused funding for the UN relief agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) following Israeli allegations that some of its staff were involved in Hamas’s October 7 attacks. The US, Britain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland have halted funding to the aid agency, a critical source of humanitarian support for over a million displaced people in Palestine’s besieged Gaza suffering from a lack of food, water, medicine and adequate shelter due to Israel’s relentless strikes and ongoing blockade. UNRWA addressed the allegations by stating that it had fired several employees over the accusations, promising a thorough investigation into Israel’s claims. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry denounced the decision of the key donor countries, calling it a “collective punishment” of the Palestinian people that revealed “miserable double standards”. Encouraging more donor suspensions, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said UNRWA should be replaced once fighting in the enclave dies down and accused it of having ties with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas in Gaza. Amid Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, UNRWA has played a key role in providing aid and shelter to displaced Palestinians through its 700 schools across the enclave. UNRWA was initially set up to help refugees of the 1948 Nakba, when over 700,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes during the founding of the State of Israel, and now employs tens of thousands of people, providing education, health and aid services to Palestinians in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
