    The Maiden's Tower, also known as Leander's Tower, is located in #Istanbul, #Turkey, on a small islet located at the entrance of the #Bosphorus Strait. The tower is believed to be built by the ancient Athenians in 408 BC to control the passage of ships. The tower has been rebuilt and renovated several times over the centuries and it has served various purposes such as a lighthouse, a fortress, and a quarantine station. The tower is also a popular tourist spot in Istanbul, with visitors able to take a boat trip to the island and climb to the top of the tower to enjoy the panoramic views of the Bosphorus and the city.

    The tower's most famous legend is of a #Byzantine Emperor who built the tower for his daughter, who was ill with a disease that was believed to be cured by living in isolation. The Emperor built the tower on a small island in the Bosphorus and placed his daughter in it to protect her from the disease. But, an oracle had told the emperor that his daughter would die from a snakebite, and true to the prophecy, a snake hiding in a basket of grapes sent to the tower bit her and she died.

    The tower has been used for many different purposes, it was used as a watchtower, a signal tower, a lighthouse and a quarantine station. Today, the tower is a popular tourist spot and a symbol of Istanbul, and it is also used as a restaurant, café and exhibition space.
