  • Activists and various organisations worldwide have called for a global strike on December 11 to demand an immediate ceasefire in Palestine’s Gaza, where some 2.2 million people are suffering under Israel’s relentless bombardment and blockade.

The #ShutItDown4Palestine strike — which has been shared widely on social media — will cover “all aspects of public life” in an effort to stop the “unjust” war on Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, according to a statement by the International Union of Muslim Scholars, which is among the many groups participating in the global protest calling for a #CeasefireNow.

The coalition noted the success of boycotts and global humanitarian actions in the past, but highlighted the UN Security Council's failure to stop Israel's onslaught. It suggested a review of the Security Council's veto system, proposing that decisions be approved via a simple majority vote rather than a unanimous one.

Those participating in the strike hope their united stance and collective action will send a message of solidarity to Palestinians and apply pressure on governments around the world to take action towards ending Israel’s ongoing aggression.

In response to the global call, Lebanon announced the closure of all government offices and institutions on Monday in solidarity with Gaza and the southern Lebanese villages that have also been victims of Israeli attacks.

Israel’s onslaught on besieged Gaza — now in its 66th day — has killed at least 17,997 Palestinians and wounded more than 49,200, with thousands feared dead under the debris of bombed buildings.

  • Rumkale (Roman Castle), Urfa which was home to many civilizations throughout history and an important center for early Christianity as it is known to be a place where the copies of the Bible were reproduced is open to tourism.

Rumkale, which straddles the boundary between the southeastern provinces of Gaziantep’s Nizip and Yavuzeli districts and Şanlıurfa’s Birecik and Halfeti districts, is located on a hill surrounded with rocks in the region where Merzimen Stream flows into the Euphrates. It is home to structures from the Urartu, Babylon, Sumerian, Seljuk and Ottoman eras.

The castle and its vicinity also draw tourists thanks to its natural beauties along the banks of the Euphrates River, particularly in spring months.

Johannes, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, is said to have settled in Rumkale during the Roman era and reproduced copies of the Bible in a rock-carved room.

The area was occupied by various Byzantine and Armenian warlords during the Middle Ages. The castle served as the seat of an Armenian patriarch in the 12th century.

From 1203 to 1293, it was the residence of the supreme head (Catholicos) of the reunified Armenian Church. In 1293, it was captured by the Mamluks of Egypt, following a protracted siege.

Restoration works that have been carried out by the Culture and Tourism Ministry have come to an end in the eastern and western walls of the castle as well as in the Barşavma Monastery, which was built in the 13th century in the north of the castle.

  • The Elite Soldiers Of The Ottoman Empire, Janissaries!

The Janissaries of the Ottoman Empire emerged as one of the most powerful military forces in the world. They were highly-trained fighters.

They played a significant role in the conquest of Constantinople. Nothing seemed capable of stopping the Janissaries’ career of conquest.

An Italian traveler named Paolo Giovio once described these ferocious warriors:

    “Their discipline under arms is due to their justice and severity, which surpasses that of the ancient Romans. They surpass our soldiers for three reasons;

    1) They obey their commanders without question.

    2) They seem to care nothing at all for their lives in battle.

    3) They go for a long time without bread and water."

Janissaries were very devout Muslims. Their primary purpose in life was Jihad only and fighting against the enemies of Islam.
