  • Palestine has made history by booking a place in the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the first time, following a goalless draw against Lebanon in Doha.

Palestine needed only a draw to progress after starting their Group I match on seven points on Thursday, and despite some harsh tactics from Lebanon, who were shown seven yellow cards, they got the result they wanted.

It will also mark the fourth consecutive time Palestine has booked their place in the AFC Asian Cup finals, to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in 2027.

Despite Israel's genocidal war on besieged Gaza, the Palestinian team has already claimed a piece of footballing history this year by making a debut appearance in the Asian Cup knockout phase.

Palestinian players have always struggled to focus on the pitch, especially since the start of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza and the deterioration of the situation in the occupied West Bank.

Many players have suffered the loss of loved ones in the blockaded enclave, while others have been unable to participate in their national team due to the harsh travel restrictions imposed on them.

  • Palestinians are marking the 57th anniversary of the Naksa, or the day of the setback — an annual observance of the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and Arab armies.

Also known as the June War, it ended with Israel defeating the Arab armies and occupying the Palestine’s West Bank and Gaza, plus Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Syria’s Golan Heights.

The war ended with another massive displacement of Palestinians from their homeland following the Nakba, meaning “the Catastrophe,” in 1948, with an estimated 250,000 to 400,000 forcibly displaced.

Many UN resolutions demanding Israel’s withdrawal from the territories have failed as Israel maintains the occupation of all territories, except the Sinai Peninsula which it withdrew from in 1982 following a peace treaty with Egypt.

Israel’s current war on Gaza extends its decades-long objective of uprooting and exterminating Palestinians from their land. At least 36,550 Palestinians have been killed in the besieged enclave over nearly eight months and nearly all of the 2.2 million population has been displaced.

  • Iconic Palestinian artist Fathi Ghaben — who documented the Palestinian resistance with bold, colourful strokes — passed away at the age of 77 in Gaza on January 25 amid a severe shortage of medicines and oxygen after Israeli authorities denied him permission to leave the besieged enclave for medical treatment he urgently required.

Reportedly suffering from chest and lung problems, Ghaben's death occurred in the midst of Tel Aviv’s brutal war on Gaza, rendering him yet another victim of Israel's genocidal military campaign against Palestinians.

But amid the challenging conditions of the occupation and with scarce resources, Ghaben created artworks that will continue to inspire resistance and adorn walls across the occupied Palestinian territories.

"My paintings are not filled with smiles; they are not loud, flashy or without a deep thought. I draw the national Palestinian issues and the reality of the Palestinian struggle," the artist once said.

He lived his life in a tent and died in a tent, the Palestinian Minister of Culture Atef Abu Saif said in a poignant tribute to the artist. Yet, his artistic presence transcended tents and even borders.

Today, Fathi Ghaben's words resonate as a representative voice for all Palestinian artists who have endured the heavy tolls of occupation and used their art as an active tool of resistance.

  • “Israel has engaged in, is engaging in and risks further engaging in genocidal acts against the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

South Africa is taking legal action to halt Israel’s aggressive military offensive in Palestine’s Gaza, filing a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Tel Aviv of breaching the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

On December 29, the country filed a petition with the ICJ to initiate genocidal proceedings against Tel Aviv, a move that comes after South Africa suspended relations with Israel on November 21 in response to the Israeli army’s intensified attacks on Gaza.

Cape Town requested that Israel immediately cease all acts and measures in violation of its obligations as a signatory to the 1948 Genocide Convention. The convention defines genocide as acts, such as killings, that are “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”

South Africa will present its case at the ICJ in The Hague on January 11. Israel — which has rejected the genocide accusation, claiming it lacks a legal foundation and constitutes a “despicable and contemptuous exploitation” of the court — will then present its defence on January 12.

Cape Town, which has been a the forefront of Israeli criticism, has long supported the Palestinian movement for freedom, drawing parallels between the plight of the Palestinians to its own struggle with apartheid.

  • Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) is an unique character in Russian folklore and an essential personage of the Russian New Year’s celebration. The roots of this character can be found in Slavic pagan beliefs. According to legends, she is a daughter of Father Frost and Mother Spring. But in her most recognizable form, she is the granddaughter and companion of Ded Moroz (Granddaddy Frost - Russian Santa Claus). She helps Ded Moroz deliver gifts to children during the New Year celebration. In Russian fairy-tales, she is young and beautiful, and she always travels with Ded Moroz on a horse-drawn sledge. She is said to live deep in the winter forest. More often, Snegurochka wears a silver-blue robe and a furry cap or crown adorned with silver and pearls. Snegurochka's name is derived from the Russian word for snow - sneg.

  • Rumkale (Roman Castle), Urfa which was home to many civilizations throughout history and an important center for early Christianity as it is known to be a place where the copies of the Bible were reproduced is open to tourism.

Rumkale, which straddles the boundary between the southeastern provinces of Gaziantep’s Nizip and Yavuzeli districts and Şanlıurfa’s Birecik and Halfeti districts, is located on a hill surrounded with rocks in the region where Merzimen Stream flows into the Euphrates. It is home to structures from the Urartu, Babylon, Sumerian, Seljuk and Ottoman eras.

The castle and its vicinity also draw tourists thanks to its natural beauties along the banks of the Euphrates River, particularly in spring months.

Johannes, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, is said to have settled in Rumkale during the Roman era and reproduced copies of the Bible in a rock-carved room.

The area was occupied by various Byzantine and Armenian warlords during the Middle Ages. The castle served as the seat of an Armenian patriarch in the 12th century.

From 1203 to 1293, it was the residence of the supreme head (Catholicos) of the reunified Armenian Church. In 1293, it was captured by the Mamluks of Egypt, following a protracted siege.

Restoration works that have been carried out by the Culture and Tourism Ministry have come to an end in the eastern and western walls of the castle as well as in the Barşavma Monastery, which was built in the 13th century in the north of the castle.

  • In an effort to draw attention to the children killed in brutal Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, nearly 500 pairs of children’s shoes were placed in front of the Fountain of Ahmed III in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 21.

Next to the shoes were photographs of some of the children who lost their lives as a result of Israel's relentless onslaughts on the besieged enclave, in addition to a banner that read: "Israel kills five children every hour.”

Tulay Gokcimen, spokesperson for the Palestine Initiative — the group behind the call to action to “Walk for Palestinian Children” — explained that the display was strategically organised so that passersby would encounter the shoes on their way to work or school.

"This is a walking path, as you can see; we made a walking path out of shoes. At the end of the path, we say: 'The lives of Gazan children were only enough to walk this path, because Israel massacred them. From now on, you must walk the rest of the path for them.’”

Israel's ongoing war on Palestinians in blockaded Gaza — now in its 46th day — has killed over 13,300 Palestinians since October 7, 5,600 of whom were children.
