Denmark’s parliament has adopted a law prohibiting the “inappropriate treatment” of religious texts, effectively outlawing Quran burnings as outrage sparked after a series of desecrations of Islam’s holy book last summer.

Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has suggested accepting Finland into NATO without its neighbour Sweden. "We may respond differently to Finland if necessary. Sweden would be shocked when we respond differently to Finland," Erdogan said at a meeting with the youth in the country's Bilecik province, adding: "Finland should not make the same mistake". Referring to the recent burning of a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, Erdogan remarked: "Did they wipe out Islam by burning our Quran? They just showed how ignoble they are. Denmark did the same". Sweden and Finland formally applied to join NATO last May but Türkiye – a longstanding member of the alliance – voiced objections, accusing the two countries of tolerating and even supporting terrorist groups, including PKK and its offshoots. In June, both Nordic countries signed an agreement with Türkiye to address its security concerns, including the extradition of terror suspects to Ankara. Erdogan reminded Sweden of these unfulfilled conditions in his latest remarks, saying: "If you absolutely want to join NATO, you will return these terrorists to us".

Far-right and anti-immigrant activist Rasmus Paludan burned the Muslim holy book during a rally against #Islam and the #Turkiye president in Sweden on Jan. 21. He did it again on Friday Jan. 27 in front of a #mosque in #Copenhagen and the Turkish Embassy in #Denmark. #Paludan, who holds Swedish and Danish citizenships, vowed to continue the act every Friday until Sweden is admitted into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Turkiye Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu called the events a “racist attack” and holds Sweden and Denmark responsible Sweden is hoping to join #NATO and needs member Turkiye's support.
