"These children don’t have anything to do with this conflict. Yet they are suffering like no child should ever suffer."
In the war-torn Palestinian enclave of Gaza, amid the relentless onslaught of daily Israeli attacks, a staggering number of children find themselves tragically unaccompanied or separated from their families.
Jonathan Crickx, UNICEF’s top spokesman in the state of Palestine, painted a grim picture of the situation after his visit to the enclave, revealing that 17,000 children are now adrift in the chaos, their innocence a casualty of conflict they had no part in.
He also underlined that after nearly four months of relentless attacks, all the children in the enclave are believed to be in need of mental health support and will not be able to receive the care they need unless a ceasefire is imposed.
Israeli army attacks have killed at least 11,000 children since October 7, but the number may be much higher. According to the Palestinian media office, there are a further 7,000 people still trapped under the debris or missing, 70% of whom are women and children.
