HALI TÜCCARI /Jean-Leon Gerome - 1887 1885'te Kahire’yi ziyaret eden ressam, ziyarette gördüĝü hadiseleri 1887'de resmine aktarmıştır. Resim, 1671'de Paris’te kurulan “Ecole Des Beaux-Arts” akademisinin salonuna asılmak üzere yapılmıştır. Tablo adını hikayesinden almıştır. Görüldüğü üzere bir halı tüccarının halı pazarında halılarını satışını anlatmaktadır. Oldukça büyük ebatlı halı tasvirinin beyaz renkli orta alanında, 16. yüzyıl klasik devir Uşak halılarında olduğu üzere salbekli iri bir madalyon yer almaktadır. Günümüzde Afyon Başmakçı ve Heriz halıları ile de benzerlikler gösterir. Resmin önünde, yerde özensizce sereserpe atılmış halılar göze çarpmaktadır. Tablonun ortasında yerdeki halıya basan halı tüccarı, alıcıya halıyı pazarlamaktadır. Arkada bulunan daha kalabalık grup ise, yaşlı satıcının halıyla ilgili anlatımını dikkatle dinlemektedir. Resmin saĝındaki devasa giriş kapısı altında da satışın gerçekleşmesini bekleyen hamallar, halıyı belli ki eşeĝe yüklemek için sabırsızlanmaktadır. Resimde ilk planda belli olmayan ancak dikkatli bakıldıĝında giriş kapısının yanındaki boşlukta gölge içinde duran feraceli bir kadın dikkat çekmektedir. Özellikle halı satıcılarında belirgin olmakla birlikte diĝer figürlerde de el, kol ve duruşlarında bir hareket sözkonusu. Kıyafetler, renkli ve dönem özelliĝi taşımaktadır. Gerome, 19. yüzyılda yaptığı Osmanlı coğrafyası gezilerinde dönemin halı motiflerinden etkilenmiştir. Etkilendiği halıları ise tablolarında işlemiştir. Halı tüccarları tablosu sıklıkla Osman Hamd Bey’in tablosu olarak karıştırılmaktadır. Bunun asıl nedeni ünlü oryantalist ressam bu tablonun da ressamı Gerome’nin Osman Hamdi Bey’in hukuk öğrenimi için gittiği Fransa’da öğrencisi olduğunun sanılmasıdır. Yeni bilgiler ışığında Gerome ve Osman Hamdi Beyin mektuplaştığı ve büyük ihtimalle hiç yüz yüze gelmedikleri bilinmektedir.
