Bu tablo, Gérôme’un 1856’daki Kahire seyahatinden esinlenerek oluşturulmuştur. Gérôme, Osmanlı sosyal hayatından ve özellikle Arap kültüründen etkilenmiş bir sanatçı olarak, bu eseri Kahire’de gördüğü sahnelerden yola çıkarak resmetmiştir. Ancak, tablonun fiziksel olarak nerede çizildiği konusunda kesin bir bilgi yoktur; Gérôme’un Paris’teki atölyesinde tamamlanmış olması muhtemeldir, zira o dönemde Avrupa’ya dönmüş ve çalışmalarını genellikle orada sürdürmüştür. Eser şu anda ABD’nin Minnesota eyaletinde, Minneapolis Sanat Enstitüsü’nde (Minneapolis Institute of Art) sergilenmektedir.
