Turkish Coffee and Culture

Turkish coffee is a big part of the culture in Turkey and it’s a custom they hold dear. The country’s so enamoured with the beverage that the Turkish word for breakfast ‘kahvalti’, literally means ‘before coffee’, and the word for brown ‘kahverengi’ means coffee coloured.

Steeped in lore and rich history, Turkish coffee is far more than a morning drink, it’s full of tradition that’s been carried down through the ages from ancestor to ancestor. In fact, Turkish coffee is so unique that it was inscribed to Unesco’s Intangible Culture Heritage List in 2013, due to the unique practices that goes into the preparation and presentation

These images were captured in the coastal city of Al Wakrah, Qatar, on the morning of December 26, 2019, when an annular eclipse was in progress.

The photographer chose a place with an open horizon where he got a perfect view of the eclipsed sun emerging from the sea. When the sun finally began to rise, it looked like two separate pieces, some sort of red horns piercing the sea. It soon took the form of a crescent, with the ‘Etruscan vase’ inferior mirage effect visible.

Due to its shape, the phenomenon was nicknamed the ‘Evil Sunrise.

Turkish homegrown fighter jet KAAN on Monday successfully conducted its second successful test flight, said the head of the nation’s Defense Industry Agency.

“Our national combat aircraft, which successfully made its first flight on Feb. 21, took off from the runway at 08.46 this morning, remained in the air for 14 minutes, and reached an altitude of 10,000 feet,” Haluk Gorgun, the agency head, said on X.

KAAN, the first fifth-generation fighter jet manufactured domestically, aims to replace the Turkish army's aging fleet.
KAAN will be capable of air-to-air combat with next-generation weapons and precision strikes from internal weapon mounts at supersonic speed, and will provide increased combat power with AI and neural network support.

The latest development makes Türkiye one of the few countries to own this technology.

It is part of Türkiye’s continuing efforts to shift most of its defense vehicles, weapons, and supplies from foreign sources to domestic ones.

Israeli strikes hit Palestine’s Gaza as Muslims marked the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
