The humanitarian situation in Palestine’s besieged Gaza is a complete "nightmare" for mothers and babies, with doctors reporting small and sickly newborns, stillbirths and women forced to undergo C-sections without adequate anaesthesia, a UN official has said. "I'm personally leaving Gaza this week terrified for the one million women and girls of Gaza ... and most especially for the 180 women who are giving birth every single day," Dominic Allen, UN Population Fund representative for Palestine, said on March 15. "Doctors are reporting that they no longer see normal-sized babies," Allen said after visiting hospitals in northern Gaza. "What they do see, though, tragically, is more stillborn births ... and more neonatal deaths, caused in part by malnutrition, dehydration and complications." The numbers of complicated deliveries are roughly twice what they were before Israel launched its war — with mothers stressed, fearful, underfed and exhausted — and caregivers often lacking necessary supplies. "It's a nightmare which is much more than a humanitarian crisis," he said. "It is a crisis of humanity ... beyond catastrophic."

Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, has expressed deep concern over the inhumane and degrading treatment inflicted upon Palestinian women and girls, describing the situation on the ground in Palestine’s Gaza as "hell," in a conversation with Türkiye’s Anadolu Agency. "We know that an estimated 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, 70 percent of them being women and children,” she said, noting that the UN had received “credible reports of Palestinian women being extrajudicially and summarily executed together with children and other family members.” "Palestinian women and children have been subjected to these egregious crimes against humanity and war crimes because they are Palestinian, but also because they are women," she added. "We know of thousands of women who have been widowed. Two mothers are killed every hour. Countless children are orphaned, becoming motherless and fatherless," she continued. Already faced with a lack of access to basic sanitation needs and healthcare, Palestinian women have also reported that they have been sexual assaulted, raped and degraded by Israeli forces, including being stripped naked, photographed and subjected to invasive searches during detention in Gaza. Alsalem stated that out of 3,000 Palestinians detained in Gaza between October 7 and December 31, 2023, approximately 200 were estimated to be women and girls, while 147 of the 3,700 Palestinians detained in the occupied West Bank were women and 245 were children. The United Nations said Israel’s war on Gaza, now approaching its 100th day, has created a dire humanitarian crisis, marking a stain on humanity. Since October 7, Israel has initiated blockades and has been relentlessly bombarding the besieged Palestinian territory, resulting in the deaths of 23,843 people, the majority of them being women and children, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel’s actions have led to severe shortages of food, water, medicine and fuel in the blockaded enclave, causing the collapse of the health system. "The massive death, destruction, displacement, hunger, loss and grief of the last 100 days are staining our shared humanity," the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, said during a visit to Gaza.
