Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in New York on Sunday, September 17, ahead of the 78th session of the U.N. General Assembly. Erdogan invited Tesla to build a factory in Türkiye, state media Anadolu Agency reported.
The two met at the Turkish House, a skyscraper that serves as the headquarters of multiple Turkish diplomatic missions in Manhattan. According to Musk, Türkiye“is among the most important candidates” for his next factory. Tesla is currently building its 7th factory in Mexico.
Türkiye reportedly expressed interest in cooperation on artificial intelligence and Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service. Erdogan also invited Musk to the upcoming Teknofest, the largest aviation, aerospace, and technology festival in Türkiye.
