    ️4.3

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is full of incredible landscapes and unique archeological sites. One of the most visited are the famous Salineras de Maras, located 46 kilometers from the city of Cusco in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, at an altitude of 3,380 meters above sea level.

Although archaeologists aren’t 100% sure when and who created the mines, they have found ceramic remnants dating from 200 B.C. to 700 A.D., suggesting the area has been mined since well before the Inca Empire. During the Inca Empire, many different ayllus (the Quechua word for community) shared the responsibility of tilling and tending to the salt ponds. While the Incas oversight the salt ponds, they gave ownership to the local families of the nearby area. These families have passed on its administration throughout the generations to come, ‘til this day.

Maras salt is appreciated for its beautiful color, rich flavor, nutritional value, and exceptional health benefits. It comes in three varieties: pink, white and brown. When the evaporation process is complete, the salt appears in these three layers. The pink Peruvian salt is the top layer. It is the highest quality salt destined for gourmet kitchen use. The second layer is white salt. This so-called “bulk salt” is also destined for kitchen use but is not quite as distinct in flavor as pink salt. The third and final layer is brown salt. This type is exclusively used for agricultural and industrial use
