Israeli troops stormed the Al Qibli Prayer Hall early on Wednesday and detained around 500 Palestinian worshippers who were praying in the complex in occupied East Jerusalem.

Viral videos from inside Islam’s third holiest site show women and children screaming for help as Israeli troops carry out a merciless attack using gas bombs and sound grenades on Palestinians in the second week of Ramadan overlapping with the Jewish holiday of Passover.

The worshippers chanted anti-Israel slogans as they were forced to leave the mosque. Israeli soldiers also smashed the windows of the southern part of the mosque, witnesses said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said seven Palestinians were injured from rubber-tipped bullets and police beatings.

Israeli police said in a statement they arrested dozens of Palestinians who were practising i’tikaf, a religious practice in which Muslims stay in the mosque overnight to pray and recite the Holy Quran.

The latest outburst of Israeli violence in occupied East Jerusalem triggered a wave of protests and condemnations from Palestinians.

Türkiye, Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia immediately condemned the most recent assault at the Al Aqsa compound and voiced their concerns about the overall surge of violence against Palestinians.

Tensions have been running high across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as Israeli forces and Jewish settlers carry out increasingly frequent raids on Palestinians.
