The death toll from the catastrophic earthquakes of February 6 has topped over 44,000 in Türkiye, and over 1.68 million people have been rendered homeless.
The three worst affected cities — Hatay, Kahramanmaras and Adiyaman — now mostly consist of rubble and dust as hundreds of thousands fled the devastated quake-hit areas in search of new lives across Türkiye.
Over 1.3 million buildings in the region have been inspected by the Turkish Urbanisation Ministry, which has stated that 507,000 independent sections of 173,000 buildings have been demolished or are severely damaged and about to be demolished.
According to Turkish experts, the earthquakes have generated an estimated 100 million tonnes of rubble.
Türkiye has mobilised all its resources and means to provide earthquake victims with accommodation and subsistence services since the deadly temblors, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. He announced that Türkiye aimed to complete the construction of nearly 200,000 permanent houses in the affected provinces and place its citizens in those houses within a year.
Over 13 million people have been affected by the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that were centred in Kahramanmaras and struck ten other provinces – Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Adiyaman, Adana, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa and Elazig.
