Authorities in Pakistan are still trying to figure out who was behind a blast at a mosque in Peshawar that killed at least 100 worshipers in the heavily fortified 'Red Zone' where police and counter-terrorism offices are located. At least 170 people were injured.

The country's 'Red Zones' are heavily fortified and guarded, with several checkpoints and layers of security surrounding them.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the attack was a suicide bombing. The attacker struck the top floor of the large mosque serving police and army members in the northwestern city near the Afghan border. Officials said 97 of the 100 dead were police officials.

Reuters reported that two members of the Pakistani Taliban said their group was responsible, and that the bombing was "revenge" for the killing of one of its members in 2022. Others from the group later denied responsibility.

The bombing comes just a day before an IMF delegation is set to arrive in the capital Islamabad to discuss a $9 billion bailout.
