Syrian refugee was elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war.

Ryyan Alshebl arrived in Germany as a refugee in 2015 has won a mayoral election in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg.

Syrians affected by the devastating earthquakes in February are attending a mass iftar amid the rubble in the town of Atareb in the opposition-held western countryside of Syria’s Aleppo province.

Attorney Nadia Kahf becomes first headscarf-wearing judge in the U.S. after Superior Court appointment in New Jersey.

Kahf, a Syrian-origin family law and immigration attorney from the township of Wayne, took the oath of office on Thursday with her hand on a copy of the Quran.

She will serve as a Passaic County Superior Court judge after New Jersey’s Gov. Phil Murphy nominated her a year ago.

Floods caused by rainfall kill at least 14 and leaves hundreds homeless in earthquake-hit region of Turkey.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said rescue teams were still searching for five people reported missing in three locations, after the flash floods turned streets in Adiyaman and Sanliurfa provinces into rivers, swept away cars, inundated homes and drenched campsites sheltering earthquake survivors.

At least 12 people were killed in Sanliurfa, including five Syrian nationals whose bodies were found inside a flooded basement apartment and two other people who died inside a van that was trapped at an underpass.

In Adiyaman, two people drowned after surging waters swept away a container home sheltering a family of earthquake survivors.

On the 12-year anniversary of Syria’s civil #war, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad visited #Moscow and held talks with Russian President Vladimir #Putin. The talks were expected to focus on rebuilding #Syria and mending Damascus’s relations with Turkey.

Assad thanked Putin for backing Syria’s territorial integrity. Russia had launched a military campaign in Syria in September 2015 and helped the Assad government gain back most of Syria’s territory from armed opposition groups.

Assad also offered Putin his support in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
