  • Yusuf Ma Dexin, a Hui Chinese Hanafi-Maturidi scholar from Yunnan, was known for his expertise in Arabic and Persian languages and profound understanding of Islam. He was also known as Ma Fuchu in Chinese.

In 1841, Yusuf Ma embarked on the Hajj pilgrimage, his departure from China caused disruptions due to the First Opium War. He accompanied a contingent of Muslim merchants who traveled overland, crossing the Sipsong Panna and then a riverboat journey along the Irrawaddy River. They were allowed to embark on a vessel from Yangon, which took them to the Arabian Peninsula.

After performing Hajj and visiting holy cities of Makkah and Madina, Yusuf Ma remained in the Middle East for eight years. He studied at al-Azhar University in Cairo and explored the Ottoman Empire, visiting cities like Suez, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Istanbul, Cyprus, and Rhodes. He died in 1874.

Below is a portrait of Yusuf Ma Dexin, and a Chinese book shows - Shakl Masjid-AlHaram AlKaba.

  • The UN's top court is set to hold hearings on the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967, with an unprecedented 52 countries expected to provide evidence.

The Palestinian state will be the first to speak in the week-long sessions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), starting on February 19.

Omar Awadallah, head of the UN Organisations department at the Palestinian Foreign Ministry, said: "We want to hear new words from the Court.”

Among other nations, the United States, Russia and China are expected to address judges at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

In December 2022, the UN General Assembly asked the ICJ for a non-binding "advisory opinion" on the "legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem."

While any ICJ opinion would be non-binding, the case comes amid mounting international legal pressure on Israel over its war on Palestine’s Gaza following the October 7 attacks.

The hearings are separate from the high-profile case lodged against Tel Aviv by South Africa, alleging that Israel is committing genocidal acts in Gaza.

Israel is not participating in the hearings and reacted angrily to the 2022 UN request, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it "despicable" and "disgraceful.”

  • Since the "humanitarian pause" in blockaded Gaza, Israel has seized and jailed more Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem than it released in the swap deal with Hamas.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society says Israel freed 150 Palestinian women and children, but also imprisoned 260 Palestinians in the past few days, taking the number of Palestinians seized by Israel in the West Bank since October 7 to more than 3,290.

The list includes 125 women and 145 children, the group added.

  • Norwegian artist Hilary Allison openly expresses her support for Palestine, drawing attention to the harrowing plight of children in Gaza who endure the horrors of bombings. She proudly covered herself with a flag of Palestine, saying "This isn't just any flag, but this is the flag of the most vulnerable and strongest humans at the moment."

  • Corporal Hasan from Türkiye’s Igdir province was part of the Ottoman army’s heavy machine gun team and guarded Jerusalem for 65 years until his death in 1982. The corporal was one of 53 deployed troops entrusted with safeguarding the Al Aqsa Mosque in order to preserve “the honour of Islam” and the “glory of the Ottomans.”

The World War I veteran belonged to the 20th Corps, 36th Battalion, 8th Squadron and never wavered from his promise to his lieutenant to protect Al Aqsa Mosque.

He was one of the rearguard soldiers stationed in Jerusalem — Al Quds in Arabic — by the Ottoman army to prevent pillage and to maintain order and safety.

According to tradition, the victor of a war never treats rearguard troops as war captives in a captured city. So when British troops entered Jerusalem and wanted a small force to stay in the city to avoid a potentially negative public reaction, Corporal Hasan remained.

No Turk had heard of Corporal Hasan until 1972, when Turkish journalist Ilhan Bardakci visited Jerusalem and met with him when the soldier was 90 years old.

The sole remaining guardian told Bardakci: “Only I am left here. Just me, a Corporal Hasan in the grand Quds.”
