  • 16 years on from their famous 3-2 win over the Czech Republic, Türkiye will attempt to recreate that historic moment which saw them win and advance to the final 16.

At their Euro 2008 game in Geneva, Türkiye came back from 2 goals down to ultimately win the match.

Arda Turan’s goal in the 75th minute and a double from Nihat Kahveci in the 87 and 89th minutes helped the Crescent Stars finish second in their 2008 group.

Türkiye would go on to beat Croatia in a penalty shootout during their quarter-finals match before ultimately losing 3-2 to Germany in the semi-finals.

  • The German city of Frankfurt was decorated with lights on March 10 to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, in what local media said was a nationwide first.

A large sign reading "Happy Ramadan" and a display of lights in the shape of stars, lanterns and crescent moons were formally unveiled in an evening ceremony, illuminating a pedestrianised street in the city centre lined with restaurants and cafes.

According to local officials and German media, it was the first time a German city had put up street illuminations for Ramadan.

The western city of Frankfurt, Germany's financial hub with a population of more than 750,000 people, is home to around 100,000 Muslims.

  • Nine countries have paused funding for the UN relief agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) following Israeli allegations that some of its staff were involved in Hamas’s October 7 attacks.

The US, Britain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland have halted funding to the aid agency, a critical source of humanitarian support for over a million displaced people in Palestine’s besieged Gaza suffering from a lack of food, water, medicine and adequate shelter due to Israel’s relentless strikes and ongoing blockade.

UNRWA addressed the allegations by stating that it had fired several employees over the accusations, promising a thorough investigation into Israel’s claims.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry denounced the decision of the key donor countries, calling it a “collective punishment” of the Palestinian people that revealed “miserable double standards”.

Encouraging more donor suspensions, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said UNRWA should be replaced once fighting in the enclave dies down and accused it of having ties with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas in Gaza.

Amid Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, UNRWA has played a key role in providing aid and shelter to displaced Palestinians through its 700 schools across the enclave.
UNRWA was initially set up to help refugees of the 1948 Nakba, when over 700,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes during the founding of the State of Israel, and now employs tens of thousands of people, providing education, health and aid services to Palestinians in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

  • In just over two months, Israel has wreaked more destruction in and upon Palestine’s Gaza than Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II.

In deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, Israel has, since October 7, entirely or partially destroyed — among other sites and buildings — places of worship, cemeteries, libraries, universities and schools in an attempt to erase everything related to Palestinian culture and identity in Gaza and render the territory uninhabitable for its residents.

Israel’s war on the enclave has destroyed over two-thirds of all structures in northern Gaza and a quarter of the buildings in the southern area of Khan Younis, according to an analysis of Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite data.

Since the start of its large-scale attacks, Israel has dropped 53,000 tons of explosives on Gaza.

The Israeli attacks have reduced 192 mosques to rubble in the besieged enclave as of December 11, according to Israeli media. Israel’s ground offensive in northern Gaza has also razed at least six cemeteries, according to The New York Times.

Israeli strikes have also destroyed the “Central Archives” in Gaza, which contained thousands of historical documents dating back more than 150 years. Gaza’s largest library, housing a myriad of historical documents and books, was also unable to escape the Israeli war machine.

Here’s a look at just some of the destruction of civilian architecture.
